Widnes’ new cinema multiplex welcomed more than 1,500 visitors through its doors over the weekend after opening to the public on Friday (14th October).

The five-screen, fully-digital Reel Cinema is the second attraction to officially open at Halton’s new leisure park, The Hive, after Widnes Superbowl opened in September.

To celebrate the opening, local children from Simms Cross Primary School were yesterday (17th October) treated to a private screening of The Lion King in 3D.

The children, aged between 8 and 11 years, have been heavily involved in the development project with activities including the burial of a time capsule on the site now marked by a plaque in the pavement.

Leader of Halton Borough Council, Cllr Rob Polhill, said: “The school is an enthusiastic supporter of The Hive project with the children getting really involved and following its progress as part of their learning, so it is great that they have been invited to share in this very special occasion.”

Reel Cinema was officially launched late last week with a glitzy VIP event to mark the national Reel brand’s 10th anniversary.

KC Suri, Managing Director of Reel Cinemas

Some 200 people were joined at the black-tie champagne and film premiere event by the Mayor Cllr Keith Morley, Cllr Rob Polhill and the Managing Director of the Reel Group, Kailash Suri.

Speaking at the event, Mr Suri, said: “Ever since our first visit to Widnes we have found it to be a really welcoming and community focused town. The new leisure park is ideal here and brings together something for everybody.

“With Reel Widnes and Superbowl open and other attractions to follow shortly, The Hive is set to become an entertainment destination, not just for the local community here, but for the wider area as well.”

Cllr Polhill added: “I am absolutely delighted that the cinema is now open. This has been a vision of the Council, and Cllr Tony McDermott in particular, for many years, and it is very exciting to see it come to fruition.

“Halton seems to be bucking the trend with the investment and jobs this development has created, and I think it is going to become a regional attraction putting Halton well and truly on the map.”

Cllr Polhill also thanked Council officers and members, Michelle Taylor of St. Modwen, and Mr KC Suri for their commitment and perseverance over the years.

Reel Cinema has so far employed 30 new staff at the multiplex. The Widnes cinema is Reel’s first venture in the North West and its success is likely to lead to further investment from the independent brand in the region.

The £10 million Hive Leisure Park scheme has been developed by the UK’s leading regeneration specialist St. Modwen, in partnership with Halton Borough Council.

Development Manager at St. Modwen, Mike Hosie, said: “This project is set to be a great success for Halton. This scheme is 100 per cent pre-let and it’s fantastic to see the attractions opening and visitors starting to enjoy all that is on offer.

“The completion of the development is yet another big milestone in the regeneration and transformation of the Widnes Waterfront area.”

Some 75 new jobs have already been created at Widnes’ new leisure development The Hive, weeks before many of its attractions are due to open.

The new jobs have been created across the family-orientated scheme’s five-screen Reel Cinema, 16-lane Widnes Superbowl and Frankie & Benny’s restaurant. The teams are set to be joined by more new starters when work completes on the remaining attractions at the site including the Nando’s restaurant and 60-bedroom Premier Inn with adjoining Brewers Fayre family pub and restaurant.

The £10 million scheme has been developed by the UK’s leading regeneration company St. Modwen, in partnership with Halton Borough Council.

Many of the employment opportunities have been secured through the Halton Employment Partnership (HEP) – an initiative launched by Halton Borough Council with partners including Job Centre Plus, local training and skills providers and other key agencies supporting skills and recruitment. The HEP helps businesses recruit local, unemployed people and supports both parties through the recruitment process.

Cllr Rob Polhill, Leader of Halton Borough Council, said: “Inward investment is always brilliant news for job creation and The Hive is an excellent example of just how valuable it can be to the local economy. It is great to see such a high number of Halton people getting jobs at this great new leisure park.”

Mike Hosie, development manager, at St. Modwen said: “It is always very satisfying to see development and regeneration being translated into local jobs.”

Construction work on Halton’s new £10 million leisure development, The Hive, finished on time this week as contractor Morgan Sindall handed the site over to Halton Borough Council.

Construction of the 100,000 sq ft site has taken just 42 weeks to complete, and the occupiers final internal fit-out is now underway.

National restaurant group Nando’s announced this month that it was taking the final 3,880 sq ft of space available at the site making the development 100 per cent pre-let.

The first phase will see the 16-lane Widnes Superbowl, multi-screen Reel Cinema with 3D digital capability, and a Frankie and Benny’s and Nando’s restaurants get their finishing touches.

Work on the phase two 60-bed Premier Inn hotel and adjoining Brewers Fayre restaurant began in August following the sale of the 1.47 acre site to Whitbread for £975,000. The four-storey hotel will be one of Premier Inn’s latest, modern designs and is expected to open early in 2012.

Widnes Superbowl has now laid and lacquered all 16 bowling lanes, which have been tested this week by local schools and charities. The centre, which offers professional standard bowling facilities, is set to open its doors to the public this weekend.

Cllr Rob Polhill, Leader of Halton Borough Council, said: “We’ve reached an important milestone and, at last, everyone will soon be enjoying the fantastic new facilities. I’d like to welcome Widnes Super Bowl to the borough – I’m sure it will be hugely popular – and it’s great that local schools and charities are getting the opportunity to try the bowling alley for free before it officially opens.”

Michael Hosie from St. Modwen who developed the site for Halton Borough Council, said: “The wide ranging leisure facilities at The Hive will attract people from all over the North West and excitement amongst the local community is really building as the opening approaches.

“This is a fantastic project – not least for the local community which will soon have access to some great entertainment facilities on their doorstep.”

Paul Galloway, project manager at Morgan Sindall, says: “We have a strong, long term relationship with St. Modwen and are delighted to hand over another project, on time and to budget. The Hive is looking fantastic and is set to make a big impression on the local area – it is a real testament to the strong partnership between St. Modwen and Halton Borough Council.”

The operator of a new 16-lane ten pin bowling centre at the Widnes Waterfront leisure development has been handed the keys to its new home to start work on the internal fit-out.

Widnes Superbowl, which will also house a Jungle Bungle indoor soft play area with a Quasar Elite function and Costa Coffee, has taken control of the site to commence work on the internal fit-out. Contractor Morgan Sindall completed the build at the end of June.

The basic fit-out of the 21,000 sq ft space is expected to take a matter of weeks before the intricate process of laying and lacquering the lanes takes place to bring them up to professional standard. The centre will conduct extensive testing of all the facilities ready for the autumn opening.

Widnes Superbowl, which will be the first bowling centre in the UK to use a new state-of-the-art scoring system, is part of Widnes’s new £10m leisure scheme which has been developed jointly by St. Modwen and Halton Borough Council.

The development, called The Hive, will include a multiplex Reel Cinema, a 36,000 sq ft ice rink operated by Planet Ice, a Frankie and Benny’s bar and restaurant and a 60-bedroom Premier Inn and adjoining 7,500 sq ft Brewers Fayre family pub and restaurant.

The latest images of the site have just been released, showing the leisure park nearing structural completion with the addition of the signature brightly-coloured cladding.

Michael Hosie, development manager at St. Modwen said: “The handover of the bowling unit for fit-out is a great milestone in the on-going regeneration at Widnes Waterfront, and crucially another step forward in the countdown to opening day.

“Widnes Superbowl is a significant contribution to the overall offering of the complex and we expect it to bring people into Halton from across the region.”

Cllr Tom McInerney, Executive Board member, Regeneration, said: “This is an exciting development that is now really taking shape. Not only will it provide a wide range of leisure options for local people, but I’m sure that it will have the effect of drawing many more visitors into the town.”

A spokesperson from Widnes Superbowl, said: “The Hive Leisure Park is set to be real coup for Halton and the wider region and we are delighted to be a part of it. A purpose-built centre in a setting like this has all the assets necessary to give the region world-class bowling facilities which can be used from professional level right through to children trying it for the first time. The fact that this is alongside other fantastic facilities like a Reel cinema, a Planet Ice rink and the new Premier Inn hotel made the investment in Widnes an easy decision for us.”

Planning permission has been granted for a 60-bed Premier Inn to be built at Widnes’s new £10m leisure scheme developed jointly by St. Modwen and Halton Borough Council.

The four-storey hotel, which includes an adjoining 7,500 sq ft Brewers Fayre restaurant, is the latest addition to the leisure complex on the Widnes Waterfront.

Standing taller than the nearby ice rink and bowling alley, the hotel will be one of Premier Inn’s latest, modern designs, with quality, innovative panels, cladding and decorative plinths.

The scheme is already more than 95% pre-let, with occupiers including a five-screen cinema operated by Reel Cinemas, a bowling alley operating as Widnes Superbowl, an Ice Rink operated by Planet Ice and a Frankie and Benny’s Restaurant.

The site is set to welcome its first visitors in the autumn of 2011.

Richard Bakes, development manager, St. Modwen said: “The hotel will make a significant contribution to the leisure complex and the on-going regeneration at Widnes Waterfront.

“The facilities at the scheme, particularly the ice rink, will attract people from all over the North West and Premier Inn will provide an ideal base for those hoping to get the most from their trip to the region.”

Kevin Murray, Senior Acquisition Manager – North, for Whitbread Hotels & Restaurants, said: “The Hive is an outstanding development and an exciting regeneration project for Widnes. It’s good news for Premier Inn that we’re part of it and good news for our customers. What’s more, our investment will bring jobs as well as increased visitor spend to the town, strengthening the local economy and helping Widnes to prosper.”

Widnes’ new £10 million leisure scheme, as part of the Widnes Waterfront regeneration, is moving forward apace, with local firms both providing supplies and carrying out the final stages of construction.

The UK’s leading regeneration specialist St. Modwen, which is developing the scheme in partnership with Halton Borough Council, has appointed local business Plasmor Ltd to provide the concrete blockwork at the site.

Plasmor, which is based just a few hundred yards from the development on Tanhouse Lane, is working on all of the units at the site, including the ice rink set to be operated by Planet Ice and the bowling alley, Widnes Superbowl.

The Hive is already 95% pre-let and will create a new focus for family-orientated entertainment in the borough. The scheme also boasts a five-screen cinema operated by Reel Cinemas, a Frankie and Benny’s Restaurant and a 60-bedroom hotel with an adjoining 7,500 sq ft restaurant.

Richard Bakes, development manager, St. Modwen said: “The Hive is really starting to take shape now. Work on-site is advancing ahead of schedule and local people are getting a much greater sense of what the scheme will bring to the area.

“Plasmor is based right on our doorstep at The Hive, which provides an excellent source of high-quality concrete products. We were keen to use contractors based in the North West as much as possible, and have sourced much of the work from the region including firms from Leigh, Manchester, and Blackpool.”

Martin Ward, Commercial Manager of Plasmor (Halton) Limited, said: “As a local company with a manufacturing site on Widnes Waterfront, employing local people, we are delighted to have been chosen to supply the concrete building blocks used in the construction of Venture Fields.

“This development brings continuing improvements to the area and will offer new leisure activities to the people of the community as well as bringing in vital investment to the borough. We wish all concerned every success with this project.”

The Hive is set to welcome its first visitors in autumn 2011.
